Ce livre existe en 2 versions téléchargeables ci-dessous. Marelle est une sorte de capitale, un de ces livres du vingtième siècle auquel on retourne plus étonné encore que d'y être allé, comme à Venise. Ses personnages entre ciel et terre, exposés aux résonances des marées, ne labourent ni ne sèment ni ne vendangent: ils voyagent pour découvrir les extrémités du monde et ce monde étant notre vie c'est autour de nous qu'ils naviguent. Tout bouge dans son reflet romanesque, la fiction se change en quête, le roman en essai, un trait de sagesse zen en fou rire, le héros, Horacio Oliveira, en son double, Traveler, l'un à Paris, l'autre à Buenos Aires. Le jazz, les amis, l'amour fou - d'une femme, la Sibylle, en une autre, la même, Talita -, la poésie sauveront-ils Oliveira de l'échec du monde? Peut-être... car Marelle offre plusieurs entrées et sorties. Un mode d'emploi nous suggère de choisir entre une lecture suivie, « rouleau chinois » qui se déroulera devant nous, et une seconde, active, où en sautant de case en case nous accomplirons une autre circum-navigation extraordinaire. Le maître de ce jeu est Morelli, l'écrivain dont Julio Cortàzar est le double. Il cherche à ne rien trahir en écrivant et c'est pourquoi il commence à délivrer la prose de ses vieillesses, à « désécrire » comme il dit. D'une jeunesse et d'une liberté inconnues, Marelle nous porte presque simultanément au paradis où on peut se reposer et en enfer où tout recommence.
