Résumé

Vaste fresque de l'Amérique de 1850 à nos jours, "Le Fils" de Philipp Meyer, finaliste du prestigieux prix Pulitzer 2014, est porté par trois personnages, trois générations d'une famille texane, les McCullough, dont les voix successives tissent la trame de ce roman exceptionnel. Eli, enlevé par les Comanches à l'âge de onze ans, va passer parmi eux trois années qui marqueront toute sa vie. Revenu parmi les Blancs, il prend part à la conquête de l'Ouest avant de s'engager dans la guerre de Sécession et de bâtir un empire, devenant, sous le nom de « Colonel », un personnage de légende. À la fois écrasé par son père et révolté par l'ambition dévastatrice de ce tyran autoritaire et cynique, son fils Peter profitera de la révolution mexicaine pour faire un choix qui bouleversera son destin et celui des siens. Ambitieuse et sans scrupules, Jeanne-Anne, petite-fille de Peter, se retrouvera à la tête d'une des plus grosses fortunes du pays, prête à parachever l'oeuvre de son arrière-grand-père. Il est difficile de résumer un tel livre. Porté par un souffle hors du commun, "Le Fils" est à la fois une réflexion sur la condition humaine et le sens de l'Histoire, et une exploration fascinante de la part d'ombre du rêve américain.
